The late Senator Akpor Pius Ewherido’s political family has endorsed the candidature of Olorogun O’tega Emerhor as their choice for Senate in the forthcoming Bye-election to be conducted by Independent National Election Commission (INEC) to fill the vacant seat of Delta Central Senatorial District following the sudden death of Senator Ewherido on June 30, 2013.

The decision to endorse Emerhor was reached at a meeting of the group which took place at the Senatorial Office of the late Senator in Effurun, Delta State, on Friday July 26, 2013 with hundreds of members of the group led by Dr. Lucky Otegheri, who is Director-General of the group, in attendance.

Declaring the meeting open, Dr. Otegheri underscored the need for Senator late Ewherido’s followers, friends and well wishers to team up with other progressives in the area to ensure another Senator is elected who would carry the dreams, visions and programmes of the Late Senator Ewherido to a higher realm of implementation and actualisation.

The group, therefore, took time to examine the political pedigree, integrity, profile and patriotic commitments of all those who are interested in running for the vacant position against the backdrop of an earlier charge to the political class by the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) during the burial of Senator Ewherido to the effect that the late senator’s dreams must not be allowed to die with him.

A source which was at the meeting disclosed that some of the concerns earlier  expressed by the UPU and considered by the group were in relation to the Senator Ewherido Urhobo Language programme, his scholarship scheme, empowerment scheme and other auspicious programmes designed by the Senator for the progress of Urhobo nation.

At the end of the deliberation, Dr. Lucky Otegheri announced the name of Olorogun O’tega Emerhor as the likely successor to Senator Pius Ewherido in the Senate. The announcement was greeted by a resounding applause, indicating a unanimous acceptance by all present at the meeting. The decision of the group was immediately communicated to Olorogun O’tega Emerhor who accepted the challenge, assuring that he would not disappoint the Urhobo nation if voted as Senator for Delta Central.

At the end of the meeting, Dr Otegheri assured that the decision would be communicated to the UPU, which is generally believed to have a major role to play in the final selection and election of a suitable candidate to represent the Delta Central Senatorial District at the Senate of the Federation.
